Harvesting rainwater for our planet (and our guests)
Lands Edge is an eco-friendly haven! From rainwater harvesting to solar power and indigenous plants, we love the planet and want to keep it flourishing! Here at Landsedge, we have built a specialized system for our guests. You have the luxury of showering in water that is sold by water companies for drinking and have the added benefit of helping to preserve the planet by using rainwater. By using a four-level filtration system, we ensure that the rainwater we collect is safe to use for a variety of purposes, such as drinking and bathing. We even have a reusable grey water system where we reuse the laundry and kitchen water to water our gardens and flush toilets.
The first system is the leaf and solid particle filter. This is to make sure the rainwater doesn't have any leaves, sticks, or small pebbles. Then we use a Water Softening System (WSS). The purpose of this system is to exchange the hardness ions (calcium & magnesium) present in the water for sodium ions. This results in soft water, which improves the taste and appearance of your water. The WSS system uses a process called ion exchange, which is where the hardness ions are exchanged for sodium ions. This is done by passing the water through a resin bed that contains sodium ions. The hardness ions are attracted to the resin and exchange places with the sodium ions, leaving the water softer.
The third system in the filtration sequence is micron particle removal. This system is designed to remove small impurities such as dirt, sand, and sediment from the water. The micron particle removal system uses a filter to remove these impurities. And we use a 1 micron particle filter, which is really tiny. The filter can be made of a variety of materials such as sand, gravel, or activated carbon. We use activated carbon. Activated carbon is like a thirsty sponge to absorb the pollutants from the water and air particles too.
The water runs through the filter, and the impurities are trapped in the filter, leaving the water clean and clear.
The fourth system in the filtration sequence is UV filtration. This system uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that may be present in the water. Our UV filtration is effective as it kills microorganisms without adding chemicals to the water. UV light is able to penetrate the cell walls of microorganisms and damage their DNA, preventing them from reproducing. This makes the water super safe to drink.
